Studio D'Artisan SD-1002 'GL3' 15oz Selvedge Wide Straight Mens Jeans - Onewash
The Studio D’Artisan SD-1002 GL3 Loose Straight is part of the brand’s GL3 Series, built around one of the most historically significant looms in Japanese denim production. The fabric is woven on the Toyoda GL3 shuttle loom, Japan’s earliest power loom, originally developed more than half a century ago. With no replacement parts available, maintaining these machines requires salvaging components from retired GL3 looms, making the weaving process both labour-intensive and extremely slow—producing only about five metres of fabric per hour.
Despite its inefficiency, the GL3 loom creates denim with a rugged, uneven texture reminiscent of vintage workwear fabrics from decades past. To maximise the characteristics of this historic machine, Studio D’Artisan carefully designed an original denim recipe that considers every detail of the weaving process, including yarn irregularity, yarn count, rope-dyeing tones and warp–weft density. The result is a fabric with a raw, textured surface that modern high-efficiency looms cannot reproduce.
The denim uses a No.6 slub nep yarn for the warp to emphasise the GL3 loom’s natural irregularity, while the weft uses a No.7 super slub yarn to further enhance the texture. The warp yarns are rope-dyed in indigo through repeated immersion and oxidation, gradually building a deep, rich blue tone that highlights the contrast between the indigo exterior and the lighter core of the yarn.
Woven into a 15oz denim, the fabric carries both weight and character, producing distinctive fades and whiskers as it ages. The jeans are cut in the SD-1002 loose straight silhouette—one of Studio D’Artisan’s widest classic fits—offering a high-rise profile with a relaxed straight leg that balances vintage workwear character with comfortable everyday wear.
